It was a happy start of July for us environmentalists. The world’s biggest expedition cruise line, Hurtigruten, is fighting plastic pollution by banning all unnecessary single-use plastic. Their goal is to become the world’s first plastic free shipping company.
Lately we have seen many big actors across the world try to raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution. National Geographic’s “Planet or Plastic?” campaign went viral, and so did the hashtag #BeatPlasticPollution for the World Environment Day. Today is even the international plastic bag free day! And it seems to be working, because we can see a global involvement by individuals as well as companies. The newest force fighting plastic pollution, is Hurtigruten. In celebration of their 125th anniversary July 2nd, they have removed all single-use plastic: everything from plastic straws to plastic bags.
But the fact that Hurtigruten cares for the environment is nothing new. In their efforts to keep our oceans clean, they have been using Delitek Waste Handling Systems for many years. We have proudly been their supplier for several of their vessels. To mention some: MS Nord-Norge, MS Spitsbergen, and MS Richard With. And while on the subject of anniversaries… We delivered our first waste compactor to Hurtigruten, MS NordNorge, back in 1996. So 22 years ago, the installation looked like this:

Thankfully, we have updated photos of our equipment today.
Delitek is very happy to see the issue with plastic pollution getting the attention that it needs and deserves. We are hoping this will result in more companies taking action towards cleaning our oceans, like Hurtigruten is doing.
